It was a warm, blustery day for Brittany and Ryan’s engagement session – but the wind was full of wonderful energy. The autumn leaves scattered happily down the streets, the wind toyed with Brittany’s hair giving her a beautiful windswept look, and it reminded us all that autumn is here and it’s ready to wow us with its colors and crackling energy. The warm golden sun paired with the wind and treated us to some exquisite light. Ryan and Brittany were so sweet – laughing during their kisses, giggling on their carousel ride, and softening as Ryan ran his hands through Brittany’s hair  – they are so truly in love.

I had such a lovely evening with you, Brittany and Ryan, and am so glad we got to capture some touching moments between the two of you. Congratulations again on your engagement!

Leafless Diaries – The 50/50 Project has paid a visit to Montana and the photos are up! What is Leafless Diaries? To quote from their website it’s a project to:

“obtain the little bits of ourselves that we don’t normally reveal to the world.

Spending approximately a week in each of the 50 states of America, they will distribute 500 blank diaries along their nationwide tour. Passing along to a plethora of different demographics of age, race and social status, to gain the broadest amount of perspectives and thoughts and ideas possible.

Each participant will write a single entry in a book – something thoughtful, something deep, something they would normally write in a diary of their own. And then they are asked to pass along the book to someone they do not know, place in a location for someone to find or request an address from the online waiting list so they can send to someone across the nation.”

The project also has a photo component, which is where I come in. I had the distinct honor of being selected as Montana’s photographer, and had the absolute pleasure of photographing individuals interested in donating their portrait to this pretty rad project. The photos continue the thread of anonymity presented in the anonymous diary entries, which is why there are black bands across the eyes. The photo subjects’ shoulders are bare to emphasize the project’s motto: sharing the little bits of ourselves that we don’t normally reveal to the world.  (Motto paraphrased slightly.)

This is a really unique project, and Leafless will be visiting many other states during their tour. You can participate as a photo subject or diary entry-writer as well! Just visit their website, look up tour info, and contact the state’s photographer for more information on shoot dates for your specific state. I highly recommend participating – it’s a great experience, and it’s pretty neat to be able to be be a part of something that is so large-scale and creative.

(And, to clear up any questions, this was not a nude shoot. Male participants only removed their shirt. Female participants simply slipped straps down over their shoulders. It’s all clean and family-friendly. :) )

And now, to the photos! Thanks again to all the participants! (Some of you had expressed an interest in purchasing prints of your image. If you are interested in a print (in which the black band can be removed), please e-mail me to let me know and I’ll send you info on how to see a gallery of your images, and how to get one of these in  your hands. Thanks!)

Just because sessions are so great because….well…there’s no need for an explanation! Christina surprised Travis on his birthday with this portrait session for the two of them. We had such a wonderful evening soaking up the late evening light, breathing in deeply the smells of autumn just beginning, and laughing and chatting as we made images. Christina and Travis are wonderful – they fit so well together, and knew just what to do.

I had a lovely time with the two of you! Happy birthday Travis! On to some of my favorite images!

Sara, a senior at Sentinel High School in Missoula, has big dreams and hopes to venture abroad to either Italy or South America. So we decided an urban feel would fit well with her desire to travel. Sara was so great to work with and was accompanied by her little sister, Madi, who was a most excellent personal assistant, fielding text messages for her older sister.

Thanks Sara for being such a good sport! I had a wonderful time during our session and really enjoyed meeting you and Madi. I wish you all the best in your senior year, and hope you get to travel the globe a bit!

  • Jean Erickson says:

I was so happy to get home from my Seattle trip and see my gorgeous daughter Saras’ Senior pictures. I absolutely love them all!!! Thanks Kristine!! You are a fantastic photographer. Only 7 more years and my youngest daughter Madi will also have her senior pics taken by you. Hopefully you are still around the area, or I might have to travel to where You are..:) Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!!

  • Hi Jean! Thank you SO much for your wonderful words! I’m so glad you loved Sara’s photos – we really had a good time. She’s a beautiful, smart girl and will go far! Hopefully I’ll still be in Missoula, too, in 7 years – I’d love to photograph Madi’s photos as well! :)

It was a downright gorgeous September day for Selina’s family portrait session with her two cute kiddos, Leighton and Aiyana. We had fun walking through the woods, playing on some perfectly-placed trees, and even got our feet wet (though I stayed dry this time around). These three make a beautiful family, and Leighton and Aiyana were so much fun to photograph! So much energy, so much happiness, so much inquisitiveness!  I had a blast – I left the session with the ultimate in kid compliments from Aiyana: “You’re FUN!”  (I think I’m still glowing!)

Thanks again for having me be your photographer!

And now to the photos…

“Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!”

Guests read excerpts from this poem by Dr. Seuss to Shannon and Adam towards the end of their ceremony – this gesture was one of the many personal touches added to Shannon and Adam’s beautiful riverside wedding at the Tarkio River Lodge in Tarkio, MT. Water is very important to both Shannon and Adam, and from Shannon’s arrival-by-boat and the gorgeous location of their vow exchange, to the stone-skipping portion of their ceremony (and you could say, even the rain) – they incorporated these personal and beautiful elements into their day.

Thank you both for having me photograph your wedding!

“Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!”

Tom and Solange. Solange and Tom. A beautiful pair, a couple that is truly meant to be. They were married at St. Francis Xavier Church of Missoula, in a ceremony filled with a variety of emotions – giggles, laughter, tears, and most of all – love, pure love.

I had the honor of capturing their special day, and witnessing the absolute joy between them. Solange and Tom – I wish you all the best in your new life together – thank you for allowing me to document the amazing, heartfelt moments of your wedding!
