I had the pleasure of meeting up with Hailey and Greg in sunny Stevensville the other day to photograph a mini maternity session with the two of them. They were both visiting from Washington state, and spending some time on family land. What a beautiful place for some photos showing off Hailey’s 33-week-along silhouette!

Thank you again for having me photograph such a milestone – and congrats again to you both, or all three of you I should say!

There is just something so sweet about newborn babies. Their little noises, their teensy-ness, their fuzzy dandelion hair…I could go on and on. And Mirai is definitely the epitome of a bundle of cute!

Just shy of a month old (she’s a 2012 leapling baby, born on Leap Day), she was content to cuddle with her mom and dad, getting little kisses every so often by the household Labradors. Mirai was pretty curious about everything going on around her, and gazed at us with her newly-focusing eyes – she was such a good little baby for her newborn photographs!

Thank you, Rachael, Mike and Mirai for a lovely session – your brand new baby girl is such a sweetie pie, and I couldn’t be happier for you all!

A belated Happy Halloween to you all! It was another great night full of little goblins and ghouls ready for tricks, treats and pics at my Halloween Photo Spook Booth.

Halloween has always been a favorite holiday of mine, and last year I thought – what the hey – it’ll be fun to do this for all the little kids that come by my house on Halloween night. It was a great success last year, and such a fun time this year as well. I noticed there were a few returning trick-or-treaters from last year (I heard one boy shout, “This is the photo house! She’s a photo god!” Thank you, mystery boy – that made my night!) as well as lots of new kids armed with bags full of candy and chocolate-covered smiles.

Thanks so much for stopping by, showing me your awesome costumes, and taking a second to make some fun photos at the Halloween Photo Spook Booth. And now, on to the pictures! (This, of course, was just a fun Halloween treat for the kids, but if you’re a parent and would like a print of your child’s photo, please be in touch by either calling me at 406-240-3469 or by e-mailing me. All orders will need to be placed by the end of the month of November. Thank you!)

It was such a pleasure meeting up with the Opitz family the other day for their sweet little family session in the woods. Their 16-month-old son, Taiga, had a great time showing off his dance moves, demonstrating his best baby stomping form, educating us on the fine art of picking up the very best sticks and rocks, and, to top it off, wow-ing us with his running skills and subsequent adorable grins.

What an absolutely wonderful session! Thank you so much for inviting me to document your beautiful family! And now, on to the photos!

Laughter and giggles were in abundance during my autumn photo session with the Shepard family. We had such a great time making some family portraits for them, and the kiddos were terrific sports and had a blast in front of the camera.

Thank you for such a fun session – you’ve got an awesome family! :)

I met up with Dawn and Eddie and their five adorable little girls, Jasmine, Jordan, Jersey, Jillian and Julisse the other day for their beautiful family portrait session. What an enjoyable time it was! We had a great time laughing and chatting as we made their portraits, and I’ve got to say – these girls blew me away with how inquisitive, sweet and polite they all were. We talked a lot about my cameras and my job and I got the sweetest little kid compliment from Jersey. She said, “When we were all walking together, I looked up at my mom and said, ‘This is so awesome!’ And I had to tell you too – this is awwwwesome!”

Thank you all SO much for such a great session! You have an absolutely gorgeous family – both inside and out! :)

And this is certainly true for the Butler family who have two-year-old triplet boys to keep them on their toes. I swung over to Darby a few days after Lauren and Jeff’s Two Feathers ranch wedding to meet up with them for their family session with their little guys. The triplets had a blast showing me the finer points of cowboy hat-throwing, hay tossing, rock-skipping, tree-”climbing,” and grass-wading (since the tall grass is much, MUCH taller than these adorable little guys!).

Thank you so much for having me photograph your handsome family! On to the photos of these little charmers.

I had the absolute pleasure of getting to photograph mister baby Liam the other day, who came to visit me with his mama and his auntie, and again with his mama and his daddy. What a little sweetie Liam is! Such a good baby boy who couldn’t get enough of his mama’s and daddy’s faces, and made the sweetest little expressions both when he was awake and when he was sleeping.

He even let his mama wrap him in a little bow at one point without a fuss!

Thank you so much, mister Liam, for being such an excellent baby model and for introducing me to your proud mama and daddy! :)

It’s not every day that you meet someone so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about raising pigs, since so many of us haven’t set foot on a farm in who-knows-how-long. But that I did when I joined Collin and his mom at the pig barn to greet his four favorite piglets that he’s raising as a part of FFA (Future Farmers of America).

Collin and his mom, Anna Marie, have a special bond with these piglets, as they both helped birth them and ensure safe passage into their new world. And they also have a fondness for the farm, too – as Collin told me, it’s one of his favorite places. Which is truly evident – he’s at home, relaxed and confident next to the hay bales and the little two-month-old piglets that root around in the straw at his feet, grunting softly and occasionally nibbling his pants legs.

So it was the perfect location to make some photos for his senior year at Big Sky High School that truly capture what Collin loves – from the wee little piggies cuddling under a heat lamp in the barn, to the two-month-old piglets he helped bring into the world. And we got a few fun shots of Collin and his mom, too, for good keepsake material. :)  Thanks so much Collin and Anna Marie – I had a such a great time, and really learned a lot, too!

On to the photos! Enjoy!

I spent the last several days at the Big Sky Photo Summit, in Big Sky, Montana, learning from fabulous photographers Dane Sanders, Mike Colón, and Tamara Lackey. To put it simply – this photo summit was wonderful. Absolutely and completely. (Thank you Tracy Moore!) Not only because we were learning so much from our presenters, but because we all made great friends with the photographers who attended this workshop. We inspired one another, we laughed, we cried (yep, we cried), and we had a blast.

For me personally, I was launched back to a time in my life when I was working at Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky as a lowly housekeeper. I did this during my summers in between undergraduate years at Carleton College. The job…eh, not so hot. Housekeeping is in no way glamorous especially when you’re wielding toilet brushes on a daily basis. (As a side note: Be nice to your housekeepers! We really appreciate it and notice when you are kind to us. And being kind is as simple as saying “hi.”)  But I wasn’t there for the job. I was there to be in Montana and to get back to my roots. I was there to push myself and step out of my comfort zone. I went to the ranch not knowing a soul, and ended up meeting some of the most amazing people I have ever met. It still holds true to this day.

The summers working at the ranch were some of the very best in my life. My friends and I would drink tea and draw beautiful pictures in the warm sunlight. We’d drive to the green bridge along the Gallatin, and leap off the steel edge into the frigid water, laughing and yelping from the cold. We’d explore waterways, find secret plank diving boards, and eat ice cream still soaked from our water adventures. We’d hike and backpack and camp and witness shooting stars so big and beautiful and glowing, we wondered if what we’d seen was actually something real. We’d talk late into the starry, starry nights about our dreams and hopes and fears, wrapped in cozy blankets sitting on the porch of crew housing. We’d get caught hiking in thunderstorms so violent and awesome that we’d be soaked through, wringing our braids out as we ran back to the car pelted by fat, warm raindrops over muddy trails. We’d cry with one another as we helped each other through personal tragedies. We’d sit in the ranch hot tub after hours, late in the evening, and run giggling to jump in the nearby creek to shock our systems with the freezing mountain water. We lived life to its very fullest.

Every.   Single.   Day.

Those summers awakened me in a way I had never dreamed of. They also awakened me to the need to document what I was experiencing. I tried. But I didn’t have the knowledge at the time to make great images. Those memories aren’t lost to me. They still exist in my mind, and I hope always will. But I don’t have the ability to share them with others except through my words.

This is why I chose to pursue photography. And I did. I took classes in film at Carleton. And I awakened something even greater – the knowledge that this was what I was supposed to do in life. I graduated with a BA in English, knowing I needed something more. I went to grad school for photojournalism. I worked at some amazing newspapers and met more wonderful people along the way. And then I started this business officially.

And here I am. Stirred by my own nostalgia and memories and grateful to be doing something I love so you can retain your memories and nostalgia in a tangible way.

Thank you to everyone at the workshop who helped me re-remember these things. I can’t tell you how much it means to me.

And now for a few of my favorite photos from our time together at the summit. We participated in a bridal shoot with Mike Colón and a fantastic local model, we were witness to Tamara Lackey’s wonderful interactions with adorable little kiddos (and noticed the irony of a paparazzi sign in the lodge), and we photographed alongside Dane Sanders for an engagement session.

Life is good. Thanks for sticking with me through this lengthy post. On to the photos!
