It may have been a bit of a rainy day for Ashley and Adam's wedding, but I think it only added to the natural beauty of the setting and of their truly heartfelt ceremony. I'm pretty sure everybody felt more in touch with all that makes Montana wonderful as the mountains peeked out amidst the clouds, as the raindrops fell on our shoulders and as we all soaked in and appreciated the notion of place and the people with whom we share it. Adam stood before friends and family and watched as his daughter, Iris, in a sweet, layered dress, made her grand entrance in a little red wagon, and not long after, her mother, Ashley, followed walking ...
Married amongst the Mission Mountains :: {Mariah and Erryn’s Sky Ridge Ranch Montana Wedding}
When you plan your wedding in Montana, there's always a risk that mountain views might be obscured by wildfire smoke. Unbelievably, this year, we really haven't had to deal with smoke all that much from our own fires...but smoke doesn't obey state lines, and it drifted over from Canada, Washington and Oregon and planted itself right in front of the beautiful Mission Mountains - and on Mariah and Erryn's wedding day. It's a part of life here, so everyone took it in stride, but we all were secretly wishing and hoping it would dissipate, especially since Erryn's family came all the way from Chicago, and we all wanted them to see just how amazing ...
Laughter and Milkshakes :: {Jessica, Robert and Rae’s Missoula Portraits}
When Jessica called me up to talk about setting up a time to make some images with her grandmother, Rae, while she and her boyfriend (now fiancé! congrats!!!), Robert, were in town I was pretty excited. Jessica has good memories of visiting Missoula and her grandmother, so this kind of session was just perfect. We wandered around downtown as Rae shared the history of some of the buildings with us, and we stopped off for a milkshake and italian cream soda and had the absolute pleasure of listening to some of Rae's amazing and hilarious stories. (She's got 92 years worth of stories to tell!) She had us all in stitches, and I swear, I ...
Converse Kicks and Prom Dress Prettiness :: Miranda’s Missoula Senior Portraits
When Miranda and I met up for her senior photos and she showed me her pair of zebra-striped converse sneakers, I was beyond excited. We'd already gotten together before this, and she had told me she loves playing with color and being creative, and, not only that, she also digs photography and plans to attend RMSP after graduation from Big Sky High School. So...kindred spirits we definitely are, and our session only became more awesome after her sweet shoe-reveal. What all did our session entail? These are just a few things... Color? Heck yes. Sweet light? You better believe it. Twirly prom dresses? Oh yeah. Bare feet? Sure thing! Jean ...
Running through the Woods :: {Kristeen and Colt’s Rock the Dress Session}
Oh, how I adore rock the dress sessions! They are just so much fun - relaxed, beautiful, playful, creative, and most importantly they take place outside of the wedding day timeline to allow more flexibility with image-making. Don't get me wrong, I love making photos during wedding days too, and Kristeen and Colt's day was certainly no exception, but there's something just so special about doing these types of portraits without time constraints, and simply allowing yourself to go with the flow of the day and just follow the light and let it do its thing. So that's what we did. It happened to be a very smoky day since wildfires in Canada, ...
Flathead Lake Fun :: {The Connolly Family’s Bigfork Portraits}
There's something about Flathead Lake that is just so magical. So when Sarah asked me about coming up to Bigfork to meet up with her and her family who were all going to be together to celebrate her dad's 70th birthday, I was excited. It ended up being a super hot day (think 98 some degrees!), but that didn't faze this group one bit! The kiddos kept us going and we had a nice time wandering the areas near the lake, as well as even taking a wade into the lake itself. The girls had a lot of fun showing off their rock-throwing skills, got kisses from their grandpa, and led us all in a little walkabout. Thanks again, you guys! It was so ...
The Mountains are Calling :: Megan and Zach’s Montana Waterfall Wedding
It's not every day that I get asked if I'll photograph a Montana waterfall wedding. But holy moly, I wish it were! When Megan contacted me a while back and asked me if I'd be willing to hike up to the falls for an intimate wedding with just her, her fiancé Zach, and their families, I was absolutely stoked. I truly love this type of creativity, adventure, and pure Montana awesomeness, and I knew we'd all have so much fun together. Megan told me that she and Zach had been road tripping in Montana a few years ago (they are both from Ohio) and had stumbled across this hike to the waterfall. When it came time to get married, they both knew they ...
Radiant Amidst the Rolling Hills :: {Raina and Danny’s Missoula Wedding}
It seems like only a few days ago that Raina, Danny and I were admiring Missoula's beautiful autumn colors and traipsing around Missoula having fun making their engagement photos. Fast forward to July, and suddenly it's their wedding day! The sky was blue, the temps were hot, and the grass was green. Though Raina and Danny had their ceremony at the Ranch Club, we also dashed downtown for a bit to hit up some of Missoula's unique buildings, and we may have stopped at a local watering hole to cool off and refresh everyone's drink as well. :) Lots of laughter and lots of smiling were definitely themes throughout the day - and anyone who ...
Furry Friends :: {Heather and Matt’s Missoula Family Portraits with their “Four-Leggeds”}
It's always so nice seeing Heather and Matt (whose gorgeous Glacier wedding I photographed last year!), and this time when I got together with them, I had the pleasure of meeting the four-legged members of their family too - Hailey and Abby the cats, and Dyson and Eureka the dogs. Heather and Matt absolutely adore their furry family members, and as an animal-lover myself, it's so sweet to see that same feeling in others as well. We had a great time soaking up the sun and the beautiful Missoula vista, racing hither and thither to photograph the cats (I may have been doing just as much rolling around in the grass as they were), and enjoying ...
A Love as Bright and Beautiful as the Big Sky :: {Stephanie and Danny’s Flying Horse Ranch Wedding}
Sometimes Montana weather in June can make us all look up at the sky in bewilderment - it was supposed to be a rainy day for Stephanie and Danny's wedding, but lo and behold, it was drop-dead gorgeous and Mother Nature even decided to go all out and match their wedding colors with bright blue skies and lush green grass. As the girls and guys readied themselves for the ceremony, there was a lot of laughter and giggling, which is always a great way to start the day in my book. The ladies laughed as Stephanie steadied herself as her maids laced up her dress, and the guys guffawed at their slick-soled shoes, and may have attempted some Michael ...
